How To Select A Fishing Rod

Selecting a fishing rod is one of the most important aspects of being a successful angler. The number of different types and lengths of rods is overwhelming. This just complicates an individual's choice of which fishing rod to use.

To increase my chances of success for each trip, I go through three steps.
  • Whether you fish freshwater or saltwater, understand the habits of the species your after and the general type of physical environment you plan to fish. See Understanding Your Target
  • Understand the makeup of a fishing rod. The rod blank, guides, handle and action determine the amount of vibration that travels from the lure/bait up through the line to the hand.
See Components Of A Fishing Rod

You need to know about the rod blank, the guides, the reel seat,
and the type of handle to understand the best use for a fishing rod.

  • Select line appropriate for the fish and its habitat that you are seeking. The line that is to be used needs to be within the range of line that a given rod can handle. However do not forget to match the stretch of line with the action of the rod.
See Selecting Fishing Line
The test, diameter, and characteristics of the type line are all important when choosing the right fishing line.

The quality of the rod you hold and the line you use are the two things that affect your sense of feel. You are better off purchasing one quality fishing rod rather than using the same amount of money to buy several cheaper rods. To transmit vibrations to your hand, fishing line must match the fishing rod you plan to use.

These steps are explained in greater detail on the pages that follow. Next is Understand Your Target
